U’s food science and nutrition department appoints new leader

The University’s food science and nutrition department has appointed a new department head after a year and a half without one.

Allen Levine, who has a doctorate in nutrition from the University, will begin Sept. 1, according to a University news release.

Levine is a psychiatry professor at the University and has directed the Minnesota Obesity Center since 1995.

He said he is excited to start.

“Most of the diseases that cause us grief today are related to food and nutrition,” he said. “I hope that the work that we do in the research arena, education and service to the community will help folks with problems related to nutrition and food.”

Levine succeeds Joseph Warthesen, who died in January 2003.

Members of the food science and nutrition faculty led the department after Warthesen’s death.
