Soggy turf forces Packers off field early

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Green Bay coach Mike Holmgren cut short Tuesday’s practice because of a “spongy” field at UC San Diego.
The Packers were scheduled to work 55 minutes, but Holmgren ended the drills 15 minutes early.
“The field is a little soft and it takes your legs away and we have three big days coming up,” the coach said after the Packers worked briefly on special situations, goal line and red zone offense.
Although the Packers normally take Mondays and Tuesdays off, Holmgren has held brief practices both days this week.
Starting cornerback Tyrone Williams, who missed half of Monday’s practice because of tightness in his back, was absent from Tuesday’s workout. Holmgren said he expects Williams to return on Wednesday.
“I thought they worked hard, and I just went over tomorrow’s schedule, and how practice on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday changes a little bit now that we get into a normal week,” Holmgren said.
“And I just reminded them of why we’re here.”
Denver coach Mike Shanahan gave the Broncos Tuesday off.
