SELF loans are for all students

by Marilyn Kosir

IâÄôd like to correct some information that was in the Dec. 6 âÄúForgive SELF loansâÄù editorial in the Minnesota Daily. While itâÄôs true many students consider SELF loans to supplement their state and federal grants and loans, itâÄôs not true that these options must be exhausted before a SELF loan is available. Any student at any stage of their college completion is welcome to apply for a SELF loan.
I share your concern about the burden of student debt. At the Office of Higher Education, our first recommendation for every student is to consider all options for paying for college before taking out any loan. However, we understand that sometimes borrowing is the only option available, and we work hard to keep SELF loan interest rates and terms competitive.
