Traffic congestion anticipated on University Avenue

A traffic advisory was issued for fans coming to this weekendâÄôs University of Minnesota womenâÄôs basketball and volleyball competitions. Traffic on University Avenue will be reduced to one or two lanes as a result of installation work on a water main in front of Williams Arena. University Associate Athletics Director Scott Ellison said people coming to the games this weekend should avoid driving on University Avenue. âÄúAvoid it, because itâÄôs going to be a mess,âÄù he said. Ellison also recommended not parking in the University Avenue Ramp because it will be difficult to get in and out of the traffic. Minneapolis Public Works General Foreman for Water Distribution Mark Ebert said the installation work is part of a larger project by Ames Construction to build separate storm drain pipes along Oak Street. Ebert said Ames has already started digging in front of Williams Arena, which will allow Public Works to install a gate valve in the water main on Sunday night. âÄúTheyâÄôre the ones who have the traffic down to one lane,âÄù Ebert said. âÄúItâÄôs their job.âÄù The construction wonâÄôt have any effect on game times this weekend, Ellison said.
