Ethics Board to deal with problems amongst peers and greek organizations

The headline for the story regarding the Fraternity and Sorority Life Ethics Board in the Sept. 12, 2012 issue of the Minnesota Daily might be slightly misleading. The ethics board being established is an effort spearheaded by the Office for Fraternity and Sorority Life in collaboration with the Office for Student Conduct and Academic Integrity. The goal of creating this board is to create a more seamless and timely process for our fraternities and sororities in regard to conduct issues and also issues that go against values that our greek community embraces.

The article may give the impression that students were driving this process when in reality, it is OFSL and OSCAI creating the board and working with students who will serve as board members. Our organizations and members will be held to the same standards as other organizations and students — the Student Conduct Code — and will have added responsibility in upholding values, which are at the forefront of the missions and purposes of each organization.

As a clarification, greek members would only have judicial matters dealt with by the Ethics Board if their behavior was related to their membership in a greek organization.
