Gophers fall to No. 3; Matson out for the season

After losing to Michigan 6-3 last Friday, Minnesota menâÄôs hockey captain Ryan Stoa said the hard part about being the top team in the country wasnâÄôt getting there, but staying there. Perhaps Notre Dame, which was named the No. 1 team in the nation for just the third time in its 41-year history, will succeed where the Gophers failed. Minnesota (7-2-5 overall, 6-1-3 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) dropped to second in the USA Today/ US Hockey Magazine poll and third in the USCHO.com/ CBS Sports Division I MenâÄôs poll. Defending national champion Boston College edged the Gophers out of second in the latter poll, while the GophersâÄô next opponent, Colorado College, who the team will play in two weeks, is ranked fifth and sixth in the polls, respectively. The Gophers received more bad news Tuesday when it was announced freshman forward Taylor Matson will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee injury. âÄúItâÄôs very disappointing for Taylor,âÄù Minnesota coach Don Lucia said in a statement. âÄúHe was off to a great start this season and worked hard to earn a place in the lineup, but this also provides an opportunity for someone else to step up and fill his spot.âÄù Matson, who will undergo surgery in the coming weeks, scored one goal in 13 games this season.
