Culture compass: rodents, responses and (breaking) routine

Here’s what you should be doing this weekend.

Friday: “The Princess Bride” – Midnight Madness

Friday may be a long day for some. Do what you must in the afternoon and evening, but then allow yourself to be fully lost in the tale of Westley and Buttercup. For one hour and 38 minutes, you can pretend that your biggest worry is a rodent of unusual size.

Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis

When: 11:59 p.m.

Saturday: Yeah Maybe #13: One Day After, One Year Later

On the event’s Facebook page, Yeah Maybe asks, “What piece of art do you want to share on the day after the inauguration?” A bunch of talented local folks (including University professor Michael Gallope) thought about it and are going to let us in on their choices. Music starts at 9 p.m.

Where: Yeah Maybe, 2528 E. 22nd St., Minneapolis

Sunday: Disruption

Every two years, Soap Factory puts on an exhibit to celebrate volunteer engagement with the gallery. The 2017 intern-curated exhibit “Disruption” opened last Saturday and will run through Feb. 12. Check out the 14 featured volunteer artists’ work, and then cause a little disruption of your own.

CULTURE TO CONSUME

Pay tribute to this: 2007

10 years ago, Britney Spears shaved her head, and Lindsay Lohan was sent to jail for the first time — both have moved on. But on Tuesday, Kylie Jenner posted a picture of herself on Instagram wearing a velour Juicy Couture tracksuit. Everything comes full circle.

Mourn this: Vine

As of Tuesday morning, Vine as we knew it is no longer. The app has officially been transformed into a six second video camera app. And though Vine’s website is still up and running, many of its social features have been obliterated. Good luck getting famous now!

Do this: moisturize

Winter winds and syllabus week festivities can wreak havoc on your skin. I don’t care if your face isn’t dry (although it probably is) — take care of it now, and you’ll be grateful someday. Need a product recommendation? Glossier just came out with a new moisturizer that people are raving about.
