University mental health services

For the past two years, I have used Boynton Health Service frequently; IâÄôm able to keep myself healthy because student services fees cover the co-pay that would otherwise cost $30 per visit. When I looked into the mental health clinic at Boynton, however, I found that there is a $10 co-pay for every visit except the first. This disappoints me. It sends students the message that our mental well-being is not as important as our physical well-being âÄî a message that can cause many people to eventually develop physical health problems related to their mental health. Anorexia, bulimia, binge drinking and suicide are all preventable if the victim could talk about problems with a trained professional. A friend of mine almost went without mental health treatment because she could not afford the co-pay. Our student services fees should pay for all of our well-being âÄî mental and physical.
