Field announced for Gopher Invitational golf tournament

Defending champion Southern Methodist University will head the 11-team field in this year’s Gopher Invitational men’s golf tournament, held Sunday and Monday at Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata, is this Sunday and Monday. It marks the fifth-consecutive year the University of Minnesota has held this tournament. This is the first event for the Gophers under new Director of Golf John Harris. Harris was hired this summer after longtime coach Brad James stepped down. This is Harris’ first time coaching collegiate golf following a successful career as a Champions Tour golf pro. SMU brings back Conference USA player of the year Kelly Kraft. Kraft, the winner of the 2009 Gopher Invitational, shot a tournament single player scoring record of 15 under par including a 64, eight under par, in the final round. Iowa comes into the tournament after a strong end to the 2009-10 season. The Hawkeyes finished second at the Big Ten Championship and finished with their highest national ranking in school history. Minnesota golfer Donald Constable is playing in his first Gopher Invitational after transferring from Texas after the fall of 2009. Constable led the Gophers at the Big Ten Championship last spring taking 16th place individually and qualified for the U.S. Amateur this summer.
