Becker earns wrestling honor

Minnesota junior Luke Becker was named the Big Ten wrestler of the week for his performances last week at the Northern Open and versus No. 21 Boise State.

Becker, who is currently ranked third in the nation at 157 pounds, recorded four pins and a technical fall in his five matches last week as the top-ranked Gophers defeated BSU, 42-0, and won all 10 titles at the Northern Open.

In other wrestling news, the team announced the signing of two top recruits who will join the Gophers for the 2002-03 wrestling season: Willy Holst, a Wisconsin State Champion in 2001 and Cole Konrad, a Junior National All-American who is also from Wisconsin.

ï Minnesota men’s swimming and diving coach Dennis Dale announced the signings of three prep athletes on Monday. Travis Beckerle, Kiel Ochalek and Mike Brown will all attend the University in the fall of 2002.

ï Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team announced today the signing of seven swimmers to its program for the 2002-2003 season.

Bridget McCoy, Katie Proell, Katherine Marshall, Katie Wind, Kate Hardt, Rebecca Slagerman and Abby Ruess all signed letters of intent.

ï Minnesota women’s track and field coach Gary Wilson announced that Jacenta Spandl, Sara Clinkenbeard, Carly Emil, Jenny Hess and Emily Brown have signed national letters of intent. The five will join the Gophers for the 2002- 03 season.
