Beta Theta Pi combines live music, whipped cream, and cancer fundraising

Usually when you see someone with pie all over their face you think of a walk-off hit in baseball or a carnival booth.

But how about a fraternity house along University Avenue that benefits the fight against cancer?

If you know the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, then maybe so.  The chapter held its fourth annual "Beta Theta Pie's" philanthropy Thursday night to benefit The American Cancer Society as part of its Sweetheart Week.

Thanks to over 450 supporters, the chapter raised $1,700.

Throughout the night sweetheart candidates, fraternity members and guests "pied" each other while the Tasty Tones performed a varitety of music live in the house.  Most of the "pie-ing" took place outside at two chairs set up near the front of the house.

"People who were walking down row were stopping to see what was going on," said Garret Zastoupil, a chapter member.  "It was a problem we weren't expecting, but it was a good problem to have."

The unusual tradition began four years ago and featured real pies, said Ben Dummer, a house member.  Thursday's version featured pie tins filled with whipped cream -though a few unsuspecting members got hit with the real stuff.

Drew Taylor , the fraternity's philanthropy chair, said planning the event was more complicted this year than previously because of the band.

"If I didn't have the guys helping out there is no way I could do this by myself," he said.  "This was a great learning experience for me because it involved teamwork and communication.  We really had to rely on each other."

Taylor said the event was a big step towards the chapter's goal of raising $5,000 for Relay for Life.

Tickets for the event were $5 in advance or $6 at the door and included two pieces of pie and a Rockstar energy drink.  For an extra two dollars, you could "pie" someone.

"Beta Theta Pie's" was one of five nights of Sweetheart Week, which will conclude tonight at five with coronation.  There are seven sorority members competing for the hearts of the 10 seniors in the house.
