Olympic trials update: Mead advances to 5,000 final

Gophers senior Hassan Mead qualified for the 5,000-meter run final at the U.S. Olympic trials in Eugene, Ore., on Monday night.

Mead finished fifth in his heat and fifth overall with a time of 13:44.56. The top 16 runners out of 25 advanced to Thursday's final. Mead will have to be one of the top three athletes with the Olympic "A" standard of 13:20 to make the Olympic team.

Three former Gophers athletes also competed Sunday or Monday:

– Middle-distance runner Heather Kampf finished in seventh place out of eight runners in the 800 final. She will not compete in London.

– Jamie Cheever qualified for the final of the 3,000 steeplechase. She placed sixth in her heat and 12th overall at 9:51.42.

– Sam Sonnenberg competed in the pole vault Sunday after rain delayed the event. She did not clear the opening height and did not make the Olympic team.
