Kim Bahmer earned her first Big Ten Diver of the Week honor of her career after posting two NCAA Zone qualifying marks at the Minnesota Challenge on Feb. 10 at the Aquatic Center.
The junior from Shakopee won the three-meter diving competition with a personal-best score of 512.65 points to mark the fifth-best three-meter score in school history. Bahmer also placed second in the one-meter competition, scoring a season-best total of 268.80 points. Bahmer currently holds the fourth best one-meter diving total in Gopher history (294.90), which she set last season.
Bahmer will continue competition when the Gophers travel to College State, Penn., to compete in the 2002 Big Ten Championships on Feb. 21- 23.
Volleyball Classic set
The National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) is pleased to announce the selected host and teams for the eighth annual State Farm Women’s Volleyball Classic. The 2002 State Farm Women’s Volleyball Classic will be held on Friday and Saturday, August 23 and 24 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn. Joining Minnesota in the Volleyball Classic will be the University of Northern Iowa, Pepperdine University and Stanford University.
Stanford, the 2001 defending National Champions, notched it NCAA record fifth national championship. Stanford has two AVCA All-Americans returning including Logan Tom (AVCA National Player of the Year). Pepperdine, who was ranked #8 at the end of 2001, has five of their starters returning, including Katie Wilkins, a second-team AVCA All- American.
Northern Iowa, ranked 16th at the end of 2001, has five of their starters returning and lost only one senior. Minnesota, host of the classic, made its third-consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament last year and has three of six starters returning for the 2002 season.
Minnesota, Northern Iowa and Pepperdine are making first appearances in the State Farm Volleyball Classic, while Stanford is making its third trip to the event.
Pairings for the 2002 State Farm Classic will be Stanford vs. Northern Iowa and Pepperdine vs. Minnesota.
Curtin, Reinen honored
Minnesota’s Ronda Curtin and Brenda Reinen have been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association-Women’s League Player and Rookie of the Week. It is the ninth rookie of the week award and second player of the week award for Minnesota this season.
Curtin had the game-winning goal in the 2-1 overtime win against then No. 8 Ohio State. It was her third game-winning goal of the season, second in which she scored in overtime. She tallied three points over the weekend, including a power-play goal in the first game of the series, which the Gophers won, 5-0. Curtin has been named as one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Patty Kazmaier Award, given to the top player in Division I women’s hockey this season, Curtin, a defender for the 2001-02 campaign, leads the Gophers with 36 points. She leads the WCHA in defense scoring and in assists, which 27 points come from setting up the goals. Not only does Curtin lead the defense, but is second in the WCHA in points scored.
Reinen had a stellar performance in the second game of the OSU series, allowing one goal in a Buckeye 5-3 opportunity. It was the second 5-3 attempt Ohio State had in the contest. Reinen had a 96 percent save percentage, and a .94 goals against average in 64:09 minutes of play. In her 13th start of the season, Reinen collected her ninth win totalling a 9-1-3 mark. She had 24 saves in the game, 10 of which came in the third period. Reinen ranks second in the WCHA in save percentage (.948), second in goals against average (1.34) and third in winning percentage (.808).
The No. 1 Gophers will look to clinch the WCHA regular season championship this weekend against Wisconsin. The Gophers need three points to clinch the league title. The border battle starts on Saturday and Sunday. Both games are set for 2:05 p.m. starts at Mariucci Arena.
