New Boyz and the Cataracs to headline Spring Jam

Hip-hop group New Boyz will headline this year’s University of Minnesota Spring Jam.

The rapper duo, Earl “Ben J” Benjamin and Dominic “Legacy” Thomas, will perform Saturday, April 21.

New Boyz got its start in 2008 in Southern California. The group’s debut single,“You’re a Jerk,” sold more than 53,000 copies in its first week for sale on iTunes and paved the way for the debut album, “Skinny Jeanz and a Mic,” in September 2009, according to last.fm.

The group recently completed a European tour and released a mix tape called “The Foolies.”

Also performing Saturday is The Cataracs, another duo, consisting of Niles Hollowell Dhar “Cyrano” and David Benjamin Singer-Vine “Campa.”

Formed in Berkeley, Calif., the indie-pop group released their first album,“Technohop Vol. 1,” in the summer of 2006, according to their website. They released subsequent albums “Technohop Vol. 2” in 2007 and “The 13th Grade” in 2008.

The group recently released its latest album, “All You,” featuring Waka Flocka Flame and Kaskade.

Prof, a rap artist who grew up in south Minneapolis, will be the opener Saturday. He released his debut album, “Project Gampo,” in 2007, Stophouse Music Group said. His latest album, “King Gampo,” was released last August.

He will join Andre Nickatina and Mumbls on the West Coast leg of Andre’s “Where’s My Money?” tour beginning next week in Chicago, according to Andre’s website.

Seattle-based The Head and the Heart will kick-off the three day event April 19 followed by a Friday performance by a country-pop singer Jessie James.
