Killewald still recovering

Former University goaltender Erica Killewald is recovering at home in Troy, Mich., after brain surgery June 6 to remove a tumor.

Tests have determined that the tumor was not malignant. Surgeons did not remove the entire tumor during the initial surgery. Additional testing, and possibly more surgery, will be factors in future treatments.

ï The Chicago Bears signed former Gophers defensive end Karon Riley to a three-year contract. Riley was selected in the fourth round (No. 103) of this year’s draft. Riley earned All-Big Ten and co-Defensive Linemen of the Year honors. His 29 career sacks in two years at Minnesota is a school record.

ï A pair of former Gophers All-American golfers are in Tulsa, Okla., this week playing in the 2001 U.S. Open at Southern Hills Country Club: three-time All-American Tom Lehman (1979-81), and two-time All-American John Harris (73-74).

Lehman, the PGA Player of the Year in 1996, has competed in 12 U.S. Opens.

“The U.S. Open is the most special tournament in the world to me,” Lehman said. “It’s good to be here playing. The golf course is a great test, as I’m sure everyone has heard for three days.”

Harris is playing in his third U.S. Open.

“It’s a great honor to be here,” Harris said. “I didn’t really expect to be, but I had a good day in the qualifying and I think that’s what gives hope to everybody; that anybody can get here if they have just one great day in the qualifying.”
