Women’s and men’s swim team members take home weekly awards

Minneapolis – After strong performances in the Arena Grand Prix last weekend, three University of Minnesota swimmers were honored by the Big Ten Conference.

On the women's team, sophomore Kierra Smith took home the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award after winning three different races — the 200-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard Individual Medley, and the 400-yard medley relay. She also placed second in the 100-yard breastroke. Her time in the 200 breastroke (2:06.43) leads the NCAA and is an NCAA automatic qualifier time.

The women's team's Breanne Siwicki also took home the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week award after posting NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the 400-yard individual medley (4:13.40). This is Siwicki's third Big Ten Freshman of the Week award this year.

On the men's side, senior Derek Toomey took home Big Ten Swimmer of the Week after his performances in the 100-yard (43.63) and 50-yard freestyle (19.68) events. Both of those times were NCAA provisional qualifying times and lead the NCAA. Toomey also was apart of the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 400-individual medley relay teams that finished first this weekend.
