On July 1, many new laws take effect

Many of this legislative session's new laws take effect July 1, including some that affect University of Minnesota students.

-The tax on cigarettes increases by $1.60 per pack, worrying some campus-area business owners.

-For University students living outside the Twin Cities when school isn't in session, it may become easier to get internships when the Greater Minnesota Internship takes effect. The program offers tax incentives for businesses to provide internships outside the metro area.

-The University receives $2 million to expand its Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.

-The University will begin receiving money to enact the tuition freeze for resident undergraduates and $35.7 million for its MnDRIVE research initiative.
