Gophers defeat Wolverines, play in Big Ten final Sunday

Minnesota will look for another Big Ten title Sunday afternoon.

Minnesota scored early in the first half to beat Michigan 1-0 and advance to the Big Ten Tournament final.

Julianna Gernes scored from a rebound created by Josee Stiever’s shot in the eighth minute.

Gernes has six goals this season. She has scored in three consecutive matches.

No. 8 Minnesota took 13 shots in the match. Michigan had seven attempts.

Michigan played defensively most of the match. They still had numbers behind the ball late in the game to keep Minnesota from adding to their lead.

Senior goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs recorded her 32nd shutout in her career with Minnesota, the most in program history.

The Gophers will play Rutgers in the Big Ten Tournament Championship Sunday.
