Six players with U ties named to U.S. Select Team

Six current and former Minnesota womenâÄôs hockey players were chosen for the U.S. Select Team announced Wednesday by USA Hockey. Senior defenseman Rachael Drazan, freshman forward Jocelyne Lamoureux, senior forward Gigi Marvin and freshman defenseman Anne Schleper will hit the ice along with former forward Erica McKenzie and current assistant coach and All-American Natalie Darwitz. Current head coach Brad Frost will be an assistant coach for the U.S team that will play at the Four NationâÄôs Cup, November 4-9, 2008, in Lake Placid, N.Y. âÄîHeidi Hanse CC teams rank in top 10 The Minnesota menâÄôs and womenâÄôs cross country teams are starting off their seasons on the same foot. Both are ranked No. 9 in the first U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association national poll. At No. 8, Michigan is the only team in the Big Ten that ranks ahead of the women, while No. 6 Wisconsin and No. 8 Michigan outpace the men. The Gophers will have to wait a little while before seeing how they really stack up nationally, however, as the season-opening Roy Griak Invitational isnâÄôt until Sept. 27. âÄîAustin Cumblad Big Ten volleyball lists six in national polls Aside from NorthwesternâÄôs match against No. 4 UCLA Saturday, none of the Big Ten teams have a matchup against competition in the top 25 this weekend, marking likely the easiest weekend the conference will have had collectively this season. And assuming no teams get upset in the final weekend of nonconference play, the Big Ten will have six different teams representing the conference in the top 25. Penn State leads the nation at No. 1, Minnesota has steadily climbed to No. 8 and Wisconsin is the third conference team in the top 15, at No. 13. No. 20 Purdue, No. 23 Illinois and No. 25 Michigan round out the conference teams, as more than half the Big Ten sits in the top 25 for the first time since Sept. 2, 2002. âÄîMark Heise
