Starting Friday, students living around the University of Minnesota will need to be careful where they park their cars as street sweeping crews begin cleaning streets throughout the surrounding neighborhoods.

Streets running west to east in the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood will be swept Friday. North to south streets in Marcy-Holmes and streets in the Southeast Como neighborhood will be swept sometime next week.

Most of the streets in Prospect Park will be swept next week, and the majority of sweeping in Cedar Riverside wonâÄôt start until the week of Nov. 7.

âÄúNo ParkingâÄù signs will be posted at least 24 hours in advance so drivers can move their cars to clear the way for sweepers. The city will also make about 3,500 automated phone calls each evening to let residents know of the street sweeping, and will post periodic updates regarding the street sweeping on Facebook and Twitter.

Drivers that do not move their cars may be ticketed and towed to the Minneapolis impound lot at 51 N. Colfax Ave.

Minneapolis does a comprehensive sweep of nearly 1,100 miles of city streets each fall and spring. The process this fall started Tuesday and will wrap up sometime near the end of November.

More than 2,300 cars were towed during street sweeping in the spring. About 2,000 were towed in fall 2010, according to the city.
