The Minnesota softball team was slow out of the gates Thursday, dropping their first two games of the season, managing just five hits on the day.
The team opened the 2000 season with a pair of 2-0 losses to Alabama and Western Illinois at the Metrodome Softball Classic in Minneapolis.
In the opener, Alabama’s Shelly Laird tossed a one-hitter against the Gophers while striking out twelve. Shelley Nichols was the only Gopher to hit safely.
Minnesota’s offensive woes continued in the second game, as western Illinois hurler Holly Killion scattered four hits and struck out six. Illinois scored single runs in the third and fourth to close out the Gophers.
Angie Recknor tossed both games for Minnesota and took both losses.
Minnesota next plays Friday at 7 p.m. when Norhtern Iowa visits the Metrodome.
