UND rallies to defeat Gophers in overtime

North Dakota scored with 35 seconds left in overtime to complete a late comeback.

The Gophers outshot, outplayed and led North Dakota for most of Friday’s game at Ridder Arena.

In the end, it didn’t matter, as UND’s Josefine Jakobsen scored the game-winning goal with 35.3 seconds left in overtime after the Sioux had rallied to tie the game in the third period.

The 2-1 defeat was Minnesota’s first home loss — not counting its Jan. 6 shootout loss to Wisconsin — of the season in 17 games.

“I thought we played well enough to win,” head coach Brad Frost said. “In the game of hockey, there’s going to be momentum swings, and it swung in their favor for 5-10 minutes, and they get a crappy goal at the end.”

Minnesota had a 36-25 shots advantage, but it committed nine penalties to UND’s six, including one with 1:15 left in overtime.

The Gophers (20-5-2 WCHA) took a 1-0 lead with four minutes left in the second period on Jen Schoullis’ 22nd goal of the season, a rebound putback that seemed to put the home team in control.

The Gophers outplayed the Sioux for the first 45 minutes — then Jocelyne Lamoreux scored her team-leading 32nd goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.

With momentum in hand, UND fought furiously down the stretch, earning many quality chances at the net. But it wasn’t a power-play opportunity late in the overtime that it capitalized.

Jakobsen drove down the left side of the ice and into the Minnesota zone, where she deflected a shot off the Gophers’ Anne Schleper and past goalie Noora Räty.

“They just hang on until the last minute,” Schleper said. “They get a bounce here or there and they capitalize and in a sense get lucky, I guess.”

Frost added that the Gophers committed too many penalties — nine, including seven in the first two periods.

The two teams will meet again Saturday at 4 p.m. at Ridder Arena.
