Gophers finish ninth in Tiger Invitational

Freshman Angus Flanagan tied for 23rd.

Freshman Angus Flanagan led the way for the Gophers as they participated in the Tiger Invitational.

Minnesota finished ninth out of 17 teams on Tuesday. The tournament was played at The Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Alabama. Flanagan finished as the Gophers top scorer shooting one-over for the tournament and tied for 23rd.

“I was so proud with how our team came back from playing a poor front nine and battled in the back nine of our round yesterday,” associate head coach Justin Smith said.

Sophomore Thomas Longbella scored four-over par. The team as a whole finished 13-over par for the tournament.

The final round got off to a later start because of rain in the morning. Flanagan shot an even par on the day. Longbella entered the day only one shot behind Flanagan, but he shot three over par to finish tied 35th. Senior Riley Johnson also finished four over par and tied for 35th. Senior Runar Arnorsson finished tied for 38th at five over par for the tournament.

“Flanagan has been so reliable and it is super exciting because he is a freshman and he still has room to develop,” Smith said.

Johnson was the other player who cracked the top 30 through two days. He shot two-under on Monday. He sat in 27th place with a tournament score of two-over.

After the first day of action on Sunday, Flanagan and Arnorsson led the way. The team finished with a total score of 296 and sat in seventh place. Flanagan shot one-over on the round, while Arnorsson matched his one-over round. They both finished tied for 22nd after one day of action.

“It was fun to see our leaders take charge and hold each other accountable this weekend, and that was fun for me to see,” Smith said.
