Gophers getting preview Big Ten championship

A first glance at the field and course for the 2008 Lady Northern Invite may give off the false impression that itâÄôs the Big Ten championships come early. Those are still six months off, but the Minnesota womenâÄôs golf team will run up against all ten of its conference foes Saturday and Sunday on the Kampen Course at PurdueâÄôs Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, the site of next AprilâÄôs Big Ten tournament. Iowa State, Notre Dame and Toledo are scheduled to compete as well in the 54-hole event. The Gophers are nearing the end of what has been a relatively productive fall. In three tournaments, they have yet to finish outside of the top five and have seven top-20 finishes individually. Sophomore Teresa Puga has set the pace for Minnesota thus far; she holds a 74.42 stroke average and has finishes of T-6th, 8th and 14th respectively in her first three tournaments. Fellow sophomores Michelle Edlin and Mary Narzisi and senior Kelli Berns have appeared in all three tournaments as well. Berns, who redshirted last year, had the GophersâÄô best individual finish at the season-opening Wolverine Invitational. The event was shortened to 18 holes because of weather, and BernsâÄô even-par 71 was enough for second place.
