Team of four freshmen compete in Oz Memorial

Coach Steve Plasencia said that runners do not run back-to-back weeks, so only freshmen competed on Friday.

The Gophers ran four unattached freshman Friday evening at the Oz Memorial meet at Les Bolstad Golf Course in St. Paul.

Since runners typically don’t run back-to-back weeks, other runners had a chance to participate with the Indiana Open happening last weekend.

Freshman Hunter Lucas led the way and finished sixth with a time of 20:39.4. Freshman Patrick Roos (21:02.3) finished 12th, while freshman Jordan MacIntosh (21:47.3) placed 39th and freshman Joe Morrison (22:23.3) ranked 53rd.

“We didn’t really run any of our varsity guys tonight,” said head coach Steve Plasencia. “We’re training through, getting ready for the Griak.”

Overall, Kyle Burdick finished first and led South Dakota State to a win.

As the Gophers set their eyes for Sept. 23 at the 32nd Annual Griak Invitational, Plasencia had great things to say about his team as the season progresses.

“I’m excited for this season,” Plasencia said. “We’ve got some guys that can run pretty well towards the front of the pack and we’ve got some depth as well. More depth than we’ve had in the past few years.”
