Thefts on the rise near campus

A man was arrested for thefts in Carlson and Middlebrook Hall.
Thefts of car stereos, computers and phone chargers were among the crimes reported over the last week.

Houses in the neighborhoods surrounding the University of Minnesota also were the target of number of robberies.

Radio thefts

Two car stereos were stolen this week in addition to the two stolen last week.

The vehicles were in front of 1024 27th Ave. SE and 1812 SE Como Ave.

Annie Johnson, 21, reported her passenger side mirror was broken and her stereo was missing.

“I could’ve taken it out probably better than they did,” she said.

Johnson had CDs, shoes and other valuable items in her car, but the stereo was the only thing missing, she said.

Johnson said police told her that since only the stereo was stolen, they could not gather evidence.

Series of thefts

A string of robberies occurred at various places on East Bank and West Bank Wednesday.

The Mayo Building, Fraser Hall, Johnston Hall, Middlebrook Hall, the Carlson School of Management and Northrop were all locations of reported thefts.

On Wednesday, neurosurgeon Andrew Grande, 40, had his briefcase and laptop stolen in the Mayo Building, he said.

Later, someone found Grande’s bag stuffed in a trashcan on the first floor of Fraser Hall, Grande said.

Grande’s items were gone, but other items stolen from someone who was on the third floor of Fraser were found in the bag, he said.

Police are currently unsure if the thefts were committed by the same person.

Arrest

A 22-year-old man was arrested Sunday after stealing items in the Carlson school and Middlebrook Hall.

A man entered an unlocked Middlebrook dorm room at about 11 a.m. Sunday and stole a computer and a phone, according to the report.

One of the room’s residents chased the man — who dropped the phone and computer — through the halls, University of Minnesota Police Department Deputy Chief Chuck Miner said.

The man was caught on security footage and identified by one of the students, Miner said.

At about 10:50 a.m. that day, a student’s unattended backpack was stolen from the Carlson school and was later found at Hard Times Café, he said.

Police checked the footage from Carlson and identified the backpack thief as the man who stole items in the Carlson school and Middlebrook, Miner said.
