Police find elderly man dead near Van Cleve

Police found the man in his car Monday afternoon.

Minneapolis police found a man dead in a car near Van Cleve Park on Monday afternoon.

Herbert Pick, Jr., 81, was discovered on 15th Avenue Southeast between Como Avenue Southeast and Rollins Avenue shortly before 3 p.m., according to Sgt. Steve McCarty.

Pick was a professor at the University of Minnesota’s Institute of Child Development for 49 years, according to his obituary.

A young park employee found Pick when he saw the car idle on the road, and he approached it. The passenger’s side door was open, and the young man did not know if Pick was alive. The park employee called 911, and police and an ambulance arrived shortly.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled the man died of natural causes. There’s no suspicion of foul play.
