Sometimes it takes a while, but once the Minnesota womenâÄôs hockey team gets going, they donâÄôt stop. The Gophers (11-2-1 overall, 10-1-1-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association ) swept Minnesota State (6-7-1, 3-6-1-1) by beating them 2-1 on Friday and 6-3 on Saturday. The Gophers started slow in FridayâÄôs game, unable to put the first point on the board until more than halfway through the game, with only seven shots on net in the first period . Senior captain Melanie Gagnon said she canâÄôt pinpoint why her team was having trouble getting started. âÄúWe have to make sure that we are setting the tone of the game, instead of us watching whatâÄôll happen before we decide to show up,âÄù she said. On a power play, junior Brittany Francis was alone near the net to put the puck in, while MinnesotaâÄôs second goal, from first-year Monique Lamoureux , came on a penalty kill. Minnesota State put one on the board with five minutes left in the game and was unable to tie it. Coach Brad Frost said the Gophers were making mistakes that shouldnâÄôt have been made, like touching pucks with high sticks and going offsides. âÄúThis was one of the stupider games IâÄôve seen us play in my nines years of coaching here. Three or four times we were taking penalties when we were on the power play,âÄù Frost said. âÄúIâÄôm happy with the two points. Our fourth line played more than a couple other lines tonight in the third period, in particular.âÄù In order to spark his other lines, Frost dramatically changed up the lineup for SaturdayâÄôs game. He said changes were needed to spark senior captain Gigi Marvi n, who played wing with first years Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux . Those three players are the top scorers on the team. The changes worked, as that line had a hand in all seven goals. Monique ended the night with two goals and four assists, while Marvin had two goals and Jocelyn had one. Kelly Seeler netted her first goal with the Gophers on a hard shot from the blue line, and the assists went to Monique and Marvin. Even though she had two goals, Monique said she wasnâÄôt concerned about getting a third. âÄúAs long as we get the two points, anybody can score,âÄù she said. âÄúI was fortunate to have people who put the puck on their tape and fortunate enough to score and bury it. Give credit to all them, too.âÄù Both Marvin and Monique are the first players on the team to net 10 goals, taking them 14 games. Marvin said she didnâÄôt have to adjust playing wing due to the new lineup, and her new line was âÄúa good little combo.âÄù âÄúWingâÄôs pretty simple,âÄù she said. âÄúIn the defensive zone, all you gotta do is cover your defensemen. Once you get over the blue line, itâÄôs all offensive.âÄù Frost said his teamâÄôs play is dictated by the teamâÄôs readiness to play. âÄúIf we [come ready to play], I think weâÄôll be fine,âÄù he said. âÄúIf we donâÄôt, and we play like we did [Friday] in the first period, we will be down a goal or two.âÄù
