Welcome Week incidents

IâÄôm writing to clarify the misleading story regarding alcohol incidents associated with Welcome Week in ThursdayâÄôs The Minnesota Daily. Housing and Residential Life data show that there were eight alcohol-related incidents involving 35 students during Welcome Week âÄî that is less than one percent of the more than 4,600 new freshman involved in the program. While any incident is regrettable, I think these numbers are consistent with our view that Welcome Week was a success in almost every respect. Alcohol abuse and underage consumption are very significant concerns across campuses in our region. The increase in incidents cited in the article, however, had nothing to do with Welcome Week âÄî the data in the graph comparing 2008 to 2007 were collected prior to the beginning of Welcome Week.
