Gophers swimmers dominate invitational

The Gophers men’s and women’s swimming teams swept past the competition Saturday in the Gold Country Invitational.
The No. 11 men’s team won the 10-team meet with a total of 1,399 points, more than 1,000 ahead of second-place St. Olaf (372).
Minnesota swept all three places in eight events in the meet, and also swept the top eight places in the 500 free.
The Gophers were led by senior Jono McLeod, who won both the 200 breaststroke and 200 backstroke. Freshman Chad Krastins won the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.77, just short of NCAA consideration.
Other winners included senior Jeff Miller (400 individual medley), freshman Max Vonbodungen (500 freestyle), freshman Ricardo Dornelas (200 free), senior Martin Zielinski (200 fly), sophomore Alex Massura (100 free), freshman Dov Malnik (200 IM) and freshman Brandon Crook (1,650 free).
The No. 13 women’s team captured titles in 16 of 17 events, compiling 1,257 points.
The Gophers were paced by a pair of triple-event champions, sophomore Kay Christoferson (100 breast, 200 breast and 100 free) and Jinny Smedstad (200 free, 200 fly and 1,650 free).
Minnesota dominated the meet by sweeping the top three finishers in seven events, including a top-eight sweep in the 100 fly and a top-six sweep in the 200 IM.
