Whitney Taney has been promoted to assistant head coach for the women's tennis team, according to a news release Monday.

Taney, a four-year letter winner at the University of Michigan, served as a volunteer assistant last year with the Gophers.

“There is no doubt that Whitney was an outstanding tennis player, but more importantly she is an outstanding person, coach, and mentor for our student-athletes,”  head coach Chuck Merzbacher said in the release. “We see eye-to-eye on how we want to build this program.”

Minnesota is coming off a 16-9 season, one that ended with its first appearance at the NCAA championships in nine years.

Taney replaces Daria Panova, who accepted the head coaching position at the University of Maryland last month.
