Mbakwe to play for Gophers

A Brett Favre-inspired Trevor Mbakwe announced via his Facebook page Tuesday that he will indeed play for the Gophers basketball team this fall after missing all of last season due to pending felony assault charges, according to the Star Tribune.

"It was tough," the Facebook posting began, "but I guess if brett favre can make a comeback I can give gopher nation 2 years they won’t forget!!!"

Mbakwe received permission from the team to explore his transfer options in May, and even after the resolution of the trial he said he was not sure if he would return to the team. Memphis appeared to be Mbakwe’s top choice, with Tigers head coach John Pastner watching Mbakwe at the Howard Pulley basketball league at one point over the summer.

The highly-touted recruit from St. Paul faced charges pending from last April during his time on the Miami-Dade junior college team. The subsequent trial was delayed numerous times, most recently set for Aug. 23.

Mbakwe avoided trial by agreeing to enter a pretrial intervention program, and will serve 100 hours of community service as well donating $100 to a Florida facility for victims of abuse. He is also ordered to stay away from the woman who accused of him of assault.

Mbakwe still has two years of eligibility left.
