No national team for Mannon after Winter Cup finals

University of Minnesota gymnast Ellis Mannon did not make the U.S. national team during Saturday’s Winter Cup finals. The freshman improved his all-around score to 80.3 on the second day of competition, but his combined score of 158.15 only ranked him 25th.

Mannon slightly injured his right leg in Friday’s preliminary round on a dismount from the high bar. Head coach Mike Burns planned to rest him on floor exercise and vault for the finals. However, the coaching staff re-evaluated Mannon before the finals and deemed him fit enough to compete on all apparatuses.

Mannon improved his score on every event except high bar and pommel horse. Pommel horse is his strongest apparatus and his third place performance of 14.9 on Friday is what earned him national team points and his ticket to the finals. He dropped his score to 13.95 during finals and failed to acquire enough National Team Points to make the final squad.

Both Mannon and senior teammate DJ Repp who competed at the Winter Cup will return to action with the Gophers gymnastics team this weekend against Iowa and Nebraska in Iowa City.
