90 faculty receive tenure

The University of Minnesota Board of Regents granted tenure to 90 faculty at a committee meeting Thursday, simultaneously promoting them to associate professors. One assistant professor was denied a permanent position at the University.

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Tom Sullivan said the University has a 55 percent success rate for those seeking tenure, similar to top institutions in the Big Ten.

The low number formally denied tenure does not reflect this rate because oftentimes pre-tenure faculty not showing promise are “encouraged out” before recommendations are brought to the board, Sullivan said.

To achieve tenure, faculty go through a six-year probationary period. These faculty members prove their worth through their teaching, research and outreach endeavors during that time. An April Daily article digs into the process further.

A number of tenured faculty also received promotions as a result of the board Faculty, Staff and Student Affairs Committee’s vote.

The full list of faculty approved for tenure or promotion can be found on the committee’s docket, pages 9-18.
