Police arrest Walter Library flasher

University police arrested a man Tuesday night suspected of masturbating in front of students in Walter Library last Thursday night.

UMPD officers arrested the 39-year-old man and are jointly investigating the crime with the Minneapolis Police Department, University police Deputy Chief Steve Johnson said. Charges are expected to be filed shortly.

The Minnesota Daily has a policy to not name suspects before they have been charged.

During the night of April 3, the suspect, described as a well-dressed man with a shaved head, sat near a female University student in the library’s basement. Shortly after, the suspect began to masturbate in the woman’s direction and asked if he was bothering her.

He left after five to 10 minutes, she said.

The suspect has a history of indecent exposure on campus. From 2002 to 2006, he was arrested for indecent exposure eight times at various locations, including five different coffee shops and Wilson Library.

He was convicted of indecent exposure in October 2005 and served in the Hennepin County workhouse.

On first offense, indecent exposure is a misdemeanor, but becomes a more serious crime after repeat offenses.
