More renters likely to be eligible for tax credit

More renters across the state may be eligible for a larger tax credit, KSTP reported.

Minnesota lawmakers increased allocation to the Renter’s Property Tax Refund program after learning the credit wasn’t keeping up with taxes.

Whether a renter qualifies for the program depends on their income, number of dependents, and how much rent they pay.

Next year’s maximum tax credit under the program is $1,600.

State Republicans faced criticism last year when they attempted to reduce funding to the program, the Associated Press reported. Democrats said the move would disproportionately harm low-income renters.

Rep. Paul Marquart, DFL-Dilworth, said about 30 percent of people who qualified for the credit last year are senior citizens or disabled people.
