Gophers get off to strong start at Ohio State

The Ohio State Invitational this past weekend saw strong performances from both the Minnesota menâÄôs and womenâÄôs swimming and diving teams, but it was clear Saturday that the women had stolen the show. Both teams had a steady opening to the three-day event. The men ended the first day of competition in second place, just behind Ohio State, and the women left in control of a first place score. The men took the top times in several events over the weekend, including the 200-yard medley relay, the 400-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke. WomenâÄôs sophomore Jillian Tyler set a meet record on the first day of competition with a time of 1:58.67 in the 200-yard individual medley. Tyler drew attention again Saturday as she set an automatic NCAA qualifying time in the 100-yard breaststroke. Her preliminary time of 58.84 shattered the previously held pool record. Tyler shaved off another four-hundredths of a second in the finals Saturday, beating the second-place finisher by nearly three seconds. Overall, the men lost a little ground Saturday, but the team remained in second place. Minnesota dominated the dayâÄôs two relay events while junior Alex Wold and senior Colin Lee-To each contributed individual victories. The only area where both teams have suffered is diving. Sophomore Drew Brown pulled out a stunning third -place finish in menâÄôs platform diving Sunday, but was unable to finish higher than seventh place in 3-meter competition. Taylor Enerson of the womenâÄôs team finished 1-meter competition in 19th place. The teams continued competition Sunday, but were not completed as of press time.
