Annual ‘Subs in Tubs’ fund-raiser held near U for Spring Jam

Participants can create their own subs, and make an extra to donate for $3.

Spring Jam is here again, filled with competitions, music, skits and fun.

Another event returning to Spring Jam this year is the University YMCA’s “Subs in Tubs” fund-raiser. It kicked off Monday outside the YMCA on University Avenue, with a goal to collect 5,000 subs for donation to homeless shelters around the Twin Cities.

For $3, participants can create their own subs and make an extra sub to donate. The extra sub is packaged in plastic tubs for storage until they are taken in one of two trips to local food shelters that day.

The “Subs in Tubs” fund-raiser is a chance for participants to buy themselves lunch while also giving to those in need around the community, said University junior Newell Hill, who helped coordinate the event.

“The idea of ‘Subs in Tubs’ was created to develop a sense of community with the University and the residents of the Minneapolis area. It is a great cause that unites the campus,” he said.

“Subs in Tubs” will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday outside the YMCA and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m on Friday outside Coffman Union.

Canned donations and other

nonperishable foods will also be collected during the fund-raiser. For information on volunteering at the event, call (612) 676-7700.
