Border Battle: Women’s soccer takes on Wisconsin

Gophers win: Minnesota ended the Badgers’ three-game win streak with a 2-1 win at home tonight. The team outproduced the Badgers in shots on goal 8-2. In a dramatic save, Gophers goalkeeper Lindsey Dare stopped a shot in the 87th minute to stave off overtime. Wisconsin’s only goal in the game was the Gophers first goal allowed at home this season. With the win, the Gophers advance their record to 16-2-0 Overall, 6-2-0 in the Big Ten. The team will take on the Northwestern Wildcats at 1 p.m. Sunday at home. 17:45 Gophers score: Clare Grimwood took a long shot from Badgers territory to put Minnesota up 2-1, with the assist coming from teammate Kaitlin Wagner. The goal is only her second of the season. Though she has had a scoring drought recently this season, Grimwood and Wagner are at the top of the Gophers offense tonight. The two have three points apiece this evening. At the half: The game remains tied at one, with Minnesota holding the advantage in shots 6-2. There have been several close saves on both sides, with Minnesota’s Kaitlin Wagner and Wisconsin’s Leigh Williams scoring the games only goals. Clare Grimwood, Kaitlin Wagner and Kelsey Hood drew first-half yellow cards for the Gophers. Wisconsin has drawn two yellow cards as a team. Not unsurprisingly, this border battle has been a physical game thus far. 26:17 Badgers score: Soon after the Gophers goal, the Badgers marched down the field to score their first goal of the game. Freshman midfielder Leigh Williams tallied to tie the game at one apiece. 24:40 Gophers score: Kaitlin Wagner found the back of the net in the 25th minute of the game with her fifth goal of the season, assisted by Clare Grimwood. The assist was her first of the season.

The Gophers are playing the Badgers tonight in the only game of this weekend’s border battle fans will be able to see in the Twin Cities. As the Gophers wind their Big Ten season down, they are on the hunt to break several Big Ten records. Expect all of the Gophers to stand out, but watch Lindsey Dare as she looks to improve her Big Ten leading .35 Goals Against Average. I will be giving you in-game updates so check back often!
