U diver collects conference honor

The Big Ten Conference announced that Minnesota junior diver Rebecca Cornthwaite has been named the Big Ten diver of the week for her performance against Iowa State last weekend. It is the first honor of her career as a member of Minnesota’s women’s swimming and diving team.

Cornthwaite captured first-place finishes in both diving events, and set a new meet record in the 3-meter diving with 394.83 points. Cornthwaite, a 2003 honorable mention All-American, won the 1-meter diving with 276.68 points. Shannon Jackson held the old 3-meter diving record, set in 2002.

Men’s golf

Minnesota men’s golfer Justin Smith has accepted an invitation to play in the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic in El Paso, Texas, on Nov. 23-25.

Smith, a senior from Moon Township, Pa., is the first Minnesota golfer to be invited twice to the tournament and will be making the eighth appearance by a Minnesota golfer in the event. The preseason second team All-American leads the Gophers in stroke average during the 2003 fall season at 71.60, and has not finished lower than fourth in a tournament this season. Smith, a 2003 honorable mention All-American and a 2002 third team honoree, won the Adams Cup Tournament earlier this season. He has qualified for the 2001, 2002 and 2003 U.S. Amateurs.
