Former U basketball player testifies before federal grand jury

Former Gophers basketball player Bobby Jackson testified Wednesday before a federal grand jury investigating the University academic fraud scandal.
Jackson, who now plays professionally for the Sacramento Kings, appeared before the jury for 90 minutes, Kevin Short, his attorney, said.
Short did not comment on what his client testified. However, he noted that Jackson is not a target in the investigation and will not be charged in the case.
The grand jury is investigating potential wire and mail fraud and appears to be centering on former men’s basketball coach Clem Haskins and former academic counselor Alonzo Newby.
Jan Gangelhoff, a former University tutor, was charged with one count of financial aid fraud last Friday.
The charge alleges that Gangelhoff enabled a player, believed to be Jackson, to collect federal Pell Grants by fraudulently preparing course work for him during the 1995-96 school year.
Gangelhoff is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court next Monday.
In March 1999, she admitted to writing more than 400 papers for at least 18 players over a six-year period. The revelation sparked the initial investigation.
