Safety alert for the Graduate Hotel on East Bank reaches students

A road closure and University building closure was sent to students just before 6 a.m. Monday.

UPDATE: MORE THAN 21 HOURS LATER, GRADUATE HOTEL SITUATION CONTINUES (9:55 p.m.)

UPDATE: UMPD CHIEF UPDATE ON GRADUATE HOTEL: “WE’RE HOPING TO RESOLVE THIS SITUATION FAIRLY SOON” (8:45 a.m.)

The University Recreation and Wellness Building and Washington Avenue Ramp were closed Monday morning due to a public safety situation at the Graduate Hotel on East Bank campus. 

A series of text and voice messages alerted students and faculty to the situation early Monday morning. 

The campus-wide notice read: “SAFE-U Alert – Public Safety Incident at Graduate Hotel East Bank roads near Graduate Hotel are closed due to public safety situation in hotel. Rec and Wellness Center closed & Washington Avenue Ramp inaccessible to vehicles. Please avoid these areas. Check umn.edu for updates.”

As of 6:15 a.m., the umn.edu website featured no added information to the alert. The University could not be reached by multiple attempts for contact.
