The board of regents gave the go-ahead for the $166 million Athletes Village, and will break ground on the facilities next month, the Pioneer Press said.
The Athletes Village will be composed of two football facilities, one facility for basketball, along with dining facilities and an academic center, the Star Tribune said.
In terms of funds, the University has around $76.5 raised for the project, which is less than half of what they needed. The other $89.5 million will be borrowed as long-term debt to be paid back by the athletics department over time, the Star Tribune said.
This decision on whether to move forward with the project was delayed for months because of cost concerns and worries of violating gender-equity laws, WCCO said.
“Athletes Village will be built next to the current indoor football practice facility, where the track is now,” the Pioneer Press said.
According to WCCO, Coach Jerry Kill said he believes the addition of the Athletes Village will be a boon for the whole university, not just the football team.
