NCAA President supports increased student-athlete financial aid

NCAA President Mark Emmert says he supports the raising of grants to student athletes by as much as $2,000 to help cover the full cost of attending college.
Emmert will ask the NCAA Division I Board of Directors to support the proposal when they convene this week.

Emmert cited his reasoning to the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics on Monday that student athletes have limited time to work outside of the classroom and their sport; also that the current model for athletic scholarships has not changed in the past 40 years.

Emmert also said he will ask the board to allow universities to provide multi-year scholarships instead of year-to-year grants. This has been an issue with student athletes being forced to transfer colleges after their university refused to renew their year-by-year scholarship.
