KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Police in Pakistan’s crime-ridden city of Karachi stormed a building at dawn Wednesday, killing five suspected kidnappers and freeing a 9-year-old boy being held for ransom.
The kidnappers had released a man Tuesday in exchange for $2,000 in ransom. The former hostage provided information that allowed police to track down their hideout in a building under construction.
A team of police commandos raided the building, finding the boy blindfolded but unharmed.
Recent years have seen an explosion in kidnappings in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city and its financial hub. A crackdown two years ago by specially trained police commandos had reduced the problem, but lately kidnappings have become common again.
