2010 All-American junior Sonny Yohn took fifth place at the 96 kilograms (211.5 pounds) weight class in this year’s FISU University World Championships in Turin, Italy.

Turin was the site of the 2006 winter Olympics. In the bronze medal match, Yohn received a fall against Dragomir Stoychev of Bulgaria, 0-1. 1-5.

The United States placed eight in men’s freestlye team standings, and some have said that freestyle is Yohn’s natural style.

“Sonny is an All-American,” assistant coach Joe Russell said. “It’s kind of neat that he got to spend a few days in Italy while the rest were stuck here in the wind storms.”

Yohn is the favorite to lock up the 197 spot on the 2010-11 Gophers wrestling team, ranked No. 4 in the country.
