Gophers junior wrestler Brandon Eggum defeated Taras Danko of the Ukraine 3-2 at 191 pounds Sunday at Rec Hall in University Park, Pa., but the Ukraine defeated the Big Ten All-Stars 25-18.
The Ukraine Nationals, a team of university-aged athletes and Olympic hopefuls, took a commanding early lead after winning the first five matches of the 11-bout dual meet and held a 15-4 advantage.
But Michigan’s Otto Olson (171 pounds), Penn State’s Clint Musser (171), Eggum and Indiana’s Viktor Sveda (191) all won their matches to narrow the gap.
Illinois’ John Lockhart nearly put the All-Stars into the lead before losing 2-1 in overtime on a referee’s decision. Purdue heavyweight Jacob Vercelli’s 5-0 loss sealed the Ukraine victory.
