Students bring sweatshop-free clothing line to University of Minnesota bookstores

Alta Gracia, a sweatshop-free collegiate apparel line, will be sold in University of Minnesota bookstores starting Monday. Students with the Minnesota Public Interest Research Group are behind the effort to bring the new brand to campus.

“It’s encouraging to see that the U is at the forefront of this fight,” said Tom Raley, Economic Justice Task Force Co-Leader for MPIRG. “This is a tremendous step in reversing the horrible trends in the global garment industry.”

The product line was developed by Knights Apparel and United Students Against Sweatshops to fight harsh garment industry conditions by supporting worker’s rights and livable wages. Alta Gracia apparel is sold at over 350 college campuses, including University of Minnesota-Morris and Augsburg College.

Next week, Alta Gracia clothing will be 20 percent off in Minnesota bookstores and online. Products can be viewed here: http://www.bookstores.umn.edu/viewCategory.cgi?categoryID=4606.
