Sara Sneer doesnâÄôt consider herself an artist. This is why Sneer, a Spanish and Portuguese studies sophomore, almost didnâÄôt enter her photographs in the 2009 College of Liberal Arts Fair. âÄúI was nervous,âÄù she said. But after seeing her photographs of Minneapolis on display in Coffman Union Thursday, Sneer said she plans on entering the fair again next year. âÄúItâÄôs just fun to show other people my work [and] get it off my computer,âÄù she said. SneerâÄôs photographs are two of roughly 90 pieces being showcased at the annual art fair, which has been hosted by the CLA Student Board for nearly a decade. The fair, which runs through Friday, has consistently seen an increase in student entries over the past several years, said CLA Student Board president Caston Johnson. As âÄúthe voice of the students,âÄù the CLA Student Board aims to get students involved with events in fun ways, said Alec Rippberger, co-chair of the external committee of the CLA Student Board. âÄúThereâÄôs a lot of creativity in CLA and I think [the art fair] helps showcase that,âÄù Rippberger said. Students like Rachel Mosey, a sophomore and art major, use the annual event as an opportunity to network with other artists and showcase their work for free. This is the second year Mosey has entered her work. âÄúItâÄôs really awesome that itâÄôs free to enter,âÄù she said. âÄúItâÄôs an easy way to get stuff displayed for anyone to see.âÄù Mosey noted that itâÄôs hard to participate in other art fairs as a college student because of entry fees and other factors. All CLA students are eligible to enter up to two pieces of art in any of the fairâÄôs three categories, which include 2D, 3D and reproducible items such as photographs. Sociology junior Joseph Fields said he entered two sculptures he created in an art class heâÄôs taking this semester. Fields said he is happy to be part of this event even though he is not an art student. âÄúI feel like art is something that you donâÄôt need to major in in order to be successful at it.âÄù Students and faculty who attend the event will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite pieces in each category as well as their favorite piece overall. The CLA Student Board will be presenting five awards, including the top-voted pieces in each category as well as a âÄúPeopleâÄôs ChoiceâÄù award, said Taya Norlander, external committee co-chair of the CLA Student Board. CLA Dean James Parente will also attend the event and select a winner for the âÄúDeanâÄôs ChoiceâÄù award. The winners will be announced Friday afternoon and receive up to a $200 prize.
