Wells now likely a no-go in USC game Saturday

Last week it was hard to say what the most exciting matchup in the Big Ten was. Among the opponents were Murray State, Eastern Michigan, Bowling Green, Eastern Illinois and Northern Colorado . Most people settled on Penn State against Oregon State, which ended up being a blowout. But this weekend, thereâÄôs no question. Ohio State, ranked as high as No. 2 to start the season, travels to Southern California to play the Trojans, the current No. 1 team. âÄúOur guys have been thinking about the privilege we have to play in a game like this,âÄù Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel said. âÄúMaybe weâÄôre thinking about it too much, who knows. TheyâÄôre excited, theyâÄôre anxious.âÄù Adding to the drama is the latest turn in the saga of Beanie Wells , the BuckeyesâÄô Heisman candidate who injured his foot in week one. Tressel announced that Wells is doubtful for the game after not practicing Thursday because of lingering soreness. âÄúWe were hoping he’d wake up this morning and feel even better than yesterday,âÄù Tressel told Associated Press, âÄúbut it didn’t happen. We’ll see from here.âÄù âÄúThe chances of him being 100 percent are not high, I would think,âÄù co-offensive coordinator Jim Bollman said to the Associated Press. âÄúThat would be a miraculous recovery.âÄù Wells didnâÄôt play Saturday against the University of Ohio and the Buckeyes nearly lost, trailing after three quarters and dropping from No. 3 to No. 5 in the polls despite a 26-14 win. Even when it was widely believed Wells would play âÄî which was all of this week before Thursday âÄî the Buckeyes were underdogs. After the news of WellsâÄô status broke, the Trojans, coming off a 52-7 win over Virginia , went from being favored by 10 1/2 points to 11 ½. Michigan at Notre Dame Michigan and Notre Dame are two of the most storied teams in college football. However, this season might not make any more stories for either team. The Wolverines lost to Utah to start the season and had a tough time with Miami (Ohio) Saturday . Notre Dame beat San Diego State to start the year , but are coming off a 3-9 record last season. âÄúOur game with Notre Dame is always going to be a marquee game,âÄù Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said. âÄúI think itâÄôs great for college football to have marquee games, and we think this is one for us each and every year.âÄù
